Different people see Lefkada in different ways. Many people visit Lefkada for a well earned break from their usual routine. To feel the sun on their skin. To relax by the pool or on the beach just watching the world go by is their dream. They won't be disappointed if they have chosen their hotel or apartment wisely. Nightlife is low key, centred around restaurants and bars, but do remember that this is Greece and the Greeks eat late so the bars remain open very late. My tip is to take an afternoon nap so that you can join in the fun.
For those with a little more energy it is well worth exploring the rest of the island. In the mountains there is a different world. The world of the old Greeks. Life hasn't changed much in many of the villages. Some haven't been touched by tourism and some have embraced it gently. This is the world of the past. The real Greece that so many of us imagine. Goats and donkeys, monasteries and windmills. But see it soon because it may not last.
Lefkada is a haven for sailing and water sports and hundreds of people arrive every summer, either to spend time on their own boats or to learn how to sail or even windsurf. For these people Lefkada is seen from the sea. The whole of the Ionian islands are their playground but Lefkada is still their home base.
In late July and August many visitors are Greek. They like the west coast beaches and many stay in the hills where it is cooler. Some with relatives and others in small hotels and apartments. The Italians also come at this time and the roads get very busy because both nationalities arrive in their cars. They see Lefkada in a different way. They are escaping the heat of the cities.
So for whatever reason you choose to visit Lefkas remember that everyone sees a different side to the island. If you can find time to experience more than one face of Lefkas you will have a really memorable stay.
