Whether you come to Lefkada for a relaxing break or for a peep into the history of 'Old Greece' you will not be disappointed. For many people, especially those who have chosen a package holiday,the village of Nidri will be the central base for their stay. Nidri is the main resort on the island and at first glance, after a long tiring journey often started in the middle of the night, the comment "what have I come to"? is very often heard. Noisy, untidy and still in need of modernisation Nidri is at the heart of the tourist industry on Lefkada. However, after a good night's sleep things should look very different. First stop must be the harbour. That is where you will find the statue of Onassis. 

At heart Nidri is a fishing port. Until Aristotle Onassis married Jackie Kennedy on the beautiful offshore island of Scorpios that is exactly what it was. Unfortunately the media alerted the world to what it was missing. A beautiful archipelago known only to the rich. Almost overnight the people of Nidri and the surrounding hill villages had to cater for thousands of holiday makers. Yachtsmen, hippies, back packers and package holidays invaded the small port. Domatia (rooms) studios and hotels sprang up wherever the locals owned land. Bars and tavernas were needed. At this time few people came in cars and the original lane that led through Nidri had to suffice. It sufficed until June 2009. At last! The bypass has opened.
