Getting a tan is part of the fun for many holiday makers but for some the sun all too often leads to sore skin and painful nights. A good sun protection plan is essential. Remember that the Greeks never lie in the sun, especially in the afternoon, and their favourite time to swim is after five pm. The best tan is one that is acquired slowly, slowly; over a few days.  Some of the most natural tans that you will see (other than on the locals obviously) are on the 'yachties'. These are the people that spend weeks, or even months, at sea; either on their own boats or those that are chartered from specialist companies. Lefkas is the ideal place to sail, especially for novices.

However, you are able to experience at least a day out at sea; relaxing, sightseeing and tanning, without having to learn anything about sails and knots. Below are some suggestions and a brief description of available trips.

The Christina. Forgotten islands.

A relaxing day out on the beautiful yacht Christina. Captain Stelios will take you to the islands of Kastos and Kalamos. These are called the forgotten islands because, although part of the prefecture of Lefkada, there is no way to reach them from Lefkas except by private boat. Go back in time when you visit these fascinating islands which were once busy and populated but are now inhabited by very few locals. Lunch included.

The Odysseia. The 'pirate' ship

A fun day out for all the family. Captain Gerry takes you on his yacht, which is really a replica of an ancient Greek trireme, to Meganissi. Next you will go to a deserted beach for a mouth watering barbecue and swimming. Umbrellas are provided for the beach and snorkelling equipment is available.  After lunch a short journey to Scorpiod, the Onassis island. There you can swim from the beach where Maria Callas used to sing. The day is completed when the sails are raised on the way back to Nidri.  Greek dancing on deck is optional for passengers but Gerry will do it anyway. Lunch included.

Sunset and Stars. A unique, unmissable evening.

While you are unlikely to acquire a tan on Sunset and Stars you will take back a memory that will last you for ever. A short boat journey (about twenty minutes) takes you to a remote mainland beach. Here you leave the boat and make yourselves comfortable on the beach. A glass of wine, a starlit night, a lovely meal and an evening of storytelling. Steve has run Sunset and Stars for twelve years and knows about astronomy and the way that the constellations combine with the myths and legends of ancient Greece. He traces a star map through the sky which even we can understand. He tells the stories and you never want to leave.

Other boat trips

There are a few large boats that take you to the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca. These are good value on a budget but don't have much in the way of English commentary and do not include any food or drink. Our advice: take sandwiches and check the menu prices on Kefalonia!
