When you are rested from your journey you may want to explore the island and surrounding islands. There are many places to go, much to see and lots of ways to see everything.
Hire a bicycle
There is a choice of bike hire companies but one of the best is Broomis, located in the All Seasons office,on the main street at the Northern end of the town. Most roads involve a hill climb of some sort so you need to be fit.
Hire a car.
So many choices but take into consideration the insurance excess before signing. You will need a credit or debit card as well as your driving license. When parking on Nidri high street there is a rule that alternate sides of the road are used in alternate months. Ask a local which side is correct at present and if you are there on the first of the month don't forget to change over! Better to use a car park. During summer there is no parking on the harbour after seven pm so don't get caught out. Hefty fines are imposed.
Take a bus.
The main bus service runs between Lefkas town and Vassiliki via Nidri. Times change according to the month so make sure you get an up-to-date timetable from one of the travel agencies. All Seasons and Borsalino have them. Buses here finish early in the evening and take a couple of hours off in the afternoon.
Hail a taxi.
Taxis are not cheap, the rising price of fuel has seen to that, but can be good value and convenient if shared between four. Always ask how much it will be before you get in. The Nidri taxi rank is situated near the NEWS STAND shop where you can also get English newspapers.
Hire a boat.
For about 50 euros per day plus fuel you can take a boat and explore the nearest islands. Scorpios and Meganissi are easily reachable. Again there is a choice of providers. Trident, on the sea side south of Nidri, and Avis (boats near the car ferries) are two of the boat hire companies. Also there is Dennis (near the sail inn) and Dimitri(north end of harbour). It may be worth haggling a little over price if it is not a busy time but that won't work in August.
Ferries
There is a regular ferry from Nidri harbour to Meganissi. Times change according to season so ask at Borsalino travel. Tickets are bought on the ferry and are currently two euros per person each way. To take a car is a lot more expensive and not really worth it as there is a local mini bus that meets each ferry. There are two stops. One at Porto Spilia and one at Vathi. Usually, but not always, Porto Spilia is the first stop. Check your timetable carefully. If you are quick you can join the locals on the minibus at Porto Spilia. This will take you up through Spartahori and across the island to Vathi. Alight anywhere but make sure you can get back in time for the ferry. Otherwise stay on the ferry until Vathi. This is a pretty harbour with some delightful bars and restaurants. The ferry to Ithaka and Kefalonia runs from Vassiliki, and, from Mid June to Mid September, from Nidri . Again Borsalino travel will advise.
Water taxi
A water taxi will take you as far as Meganissi or as close as Agia Kiriaki, the small church across from Nidri harbour. The price is per taxi so can be steep unless you share. However it is the only way to reach Meganissi after the last ferry has gone. Ask for Yannis at Cafe La Minute by Onassis's statue or speak to Stelios at the yacht Christina.
Walk
Wherever you walk, and the best walks are behind Nidri, into the olive groves and orchards, take water! It is so easy to underestimate the power of the sun, especially on a cloudy day. Dehydration has set in as soon as you feel thirsty.
Scooters.
These have been left until last because we never recommend them. Potholes and uneven surfaces equal danger to even the most careful and experienced rider. Car drivers are not the most considerate in the world and we have seen too many holidays ruined. Serious injuries and even deaths occur every year. However, if you still insist on hiring a scooter:
Wear a helmet! It is the law in Greece anyway whatever you see others doing. There is a hefty fine if you are caught without one. Wear trousers to protect the legs! Don't go too far. There isn't much fuel in those small tanks and there are no filling stations on the west coast. Don't overload a small bike with two large adults. A nervous pillion passenger can easily turn a minor fall into a major accident.
